Question : Will it hurt my antique mantle clock if it's on the mantle during a fire?
I have an antique keywound mantle clock, and it's on the mantle, above the fireplace. Will it hurt the clock if I have a fire in the fireplace with it on the mantle?

Answer:
Here's a quick and simple test... next time you build a fire, place a candle where the clock would normally set. If the candle survives the heat intact, your clock should be ok too. I'd just make one note of caution... the extra heat may cause the wood to dry out, over time. Cleaning the clock with Murphy's oil soap on a regular basis will help prevent that, as well as prevent a soot build up, heheh. If you only build a fire once in awhile, it shouldn't be a problem. Have Fun

Question : How much to have a gas fire installed? (Corgi registered)?
Ive seen a living flame gas fire and mantle, I already have a metal box flu with a chimney coming so hopefully that will suffice. I was wondering how much it would cost to have the fire installed with or without the mantle. I live in Leeds, West Yorkshire

Answer:
The metal box has to be a double skin box for a living flame fire, you can tell by the top of it, if it is sloped under the top it is wrong, if it is flat at the top it is right. If it is right, install of fire and fireplace, with certificate from corgi, and a commissioning certificate from the installer, about £180 if local. If box is wrong, anywhere from £250 - £350. Hope this helps.

Question : What is an Aztec mantle? some kind of fire??? i know it isn't but what is it!!!?
i need it quick!!! it is for homework in in two days!!! HELP ME PLEASE x

Answer:
Montezuma, one of the kings of the Aztec culture was an influential part of Aztec dress. Many of the things he wore were often passed down to lower cultures and represented power. Montezuma wore a mantle, which was white and blue called a tlimatli. This mantle folded over his shoulders and was held together by a green clasp called a chalchivitl. He wore precious gems set in gold on other parts of his dress. His feet were adorned with golden sandals. Montezuma's dress was mainly for adornment and to show his high-ranking status.

Question : Any ideas on how to remove black soot from a wooden frame and mantle around a gas fireplace?
Left the flue closed while the fire burned for about 15 minutes. Smoke left black soot stains on frame and under mantle. Wood has medium brown stain, so some products (like Magic Eraser) won't work on it.

Answer:
There is a product called Speedy White and it is made to remove soot (and it works). Are you sure that the wood is not slightly burned or the finish on the wood? 15 minutes is a long time, if the finish is actually burned you may have to strip it and refinish it, if it isn't wiping off, look close, the problem may be deeper than you think. Dish soap will remove the soot also, I have used it to clean glass on my wood stove. Oh, you will probably find soot on may more things in that room, look close. I have worked with and sold gas logs for 20 years.

Question : I have a woodburning fireplace and the mantle is only about 12-18 inches away from the top of the fireplace.?
I know that this is less space than fire code calls for, I was told I could get a mantle sheild. Does anyone know where to get one that is not so ugly or one that attaches to the fireplace and not the mantle. Or does anyone have another suggestion for me?

Answer:
Fireplace shops have probably a better selection than you will find at home improvement stores. You can also find a limited number at architectural salvage places. Some chimney sweeps will install them for you. They do have decorative ones that come in a variety of different metals that can match your decor and the fire screen or equipment.

Question : I need help finding a fake fireplace/mantle for home.?
I have seen the free- standing mantles that are used for decorating but can't seem to find them. I am not for sure what they are called, so I am assuming they are called mantles. I want to find it because we live in Army Housing and do not have fire places and I have alot of Christmas decor for a fireplace mantle. Does anyone know what these are actually called or where I can find them???? HELP!!!!!!!!

Answer:
Heaps of ventless fireplaces can be found on this site. They're not for warmth at all - just ambiance: http://www.homedecorators.com/Furniture/S/fireplace/Living_Room/Ventless_Fireplaces/
