Question : Fireplace??????????
My house has a fireplace which is approximately 13 years old. (the house is 13 years old). Anyway, when I build a fire in the fireplace there is smoke in the house. What could be wrong with it? Could it be clogged up or something. It is a Marco Fireplace. Thanks
How do I know if my chimney is clogged? And what do I do about it if it is? thanks
Answer:
Are you positive the flue is completely open? Get a flashlight and look up the chimney. There is a gate called a flue that can be closed when not using the fireplace. Other than that, it could be carbon or soot deposit slowing the flow, or even nests or dead animals clogging it up higher.

Question : How to install a glass fireplace door?
Currently we have a manufacture fireplace. On the front of the fireplace it has a metal net screen that you pull from both sides to close it. This screen is attached by little round links to a metal bar that runs across the top outside opening of the fireplace. We want to install a glass fireplace door - 1st - how does one remove that bar? 2nd - how do you get the correct measurements for the new glass fireplace door? 3rd - how do you install the fireplace door? Your help is much appreciated.
Answer:
I had a similar set up but instead of a door, there was a solid piece of glass between the screen (as youd described) and the glass. Ours was a Heatilator and on their units, you could read the model number behind the access panel on the bottom of the unit. Based on that model number, they had a
2 panel door that I ordered. It came with detailed instructions on installing it.
Depending on your unit, you might have the same vendor, if not maybe you can get the model number and then search for the door.

Question : How does your fireplace look and is it expensive?
I have a fireplace with old stone on it, and want to take that off and build a floor to ceiling fireplace, maybe using tiles (ceramic). Does anyone have any ideas or pictures of their own of something that's not cheap, but not overly expensive either?
I have searched google, and only get the old style mantel fireplace images.

we have a marble and wood fireplace. It's pretty. I don't think it was expensive, but it wasn't cheap either.

Question : What is the Average Cost of Building a Fireplace?
I am buying a house that doesn't have a fireplace. In the future I would like to install one. I am currently figuring up my 5 year plan for the property and want to know about how much the addition of a wood burning masonry fireplace costs. I am aware that this is not the most efficient fireplace available, but this is what I am going to choose based strictly on my preference.
I have searched the internet and have found many articles debating different types of fireplaces, estimated resale value, etc. but nothing with a ball park dollar amount. If anybody has added a fireplace to their house or is a contractor who has worked on similar jobs, I would greatly appreciate an approximate figure.

Question : I have an indoor fireplace, can I open it up from the outside and have a functional indoor/outdoor fireplace?
My livingroom fireplace is on an exterior wall that faces my pool. I've always wanted to break an opening from the outside of the house so it can function both as and indoor and outdoor fireplace. Is my idea possible?
Answer:
Most construction/remodeling type companies offer free estimates (especially now with the housing market in decline) so I would call a few. Have them out and explain what you want. See if they say it's possible or not, or if the cost would be worth doing it anyway.
Sounds like a cool idea! I bet it's possible, with some sort of hinged-metal door on both sides. You'd have to be able to close it up on the inside if you were using it outside, I think, due to winds and the strong possibilty of your living room catching on fire. Even with this door-type thing, it would make your LR drafty in the winter probably.
But just ask, because someone, somewhere can probably figure out a way to do this. If you hear "it can't be done" from two companies, I'd try again because they may just not know how, or may not want to undertake such a unique task. Good luck to you, though, I hope it can be done!

depends on the fire place and the spce of the room you are in. You need to burn fire wood that has cured over the summer and winter, burning green cut logs will not give off the heat you are looking for. Heat rises so if you have a ceiling fan in the room turn it on lower counter clockwise to circulate the air

Question : Fireplace - any tips on reducing smoke coming in instead of going out?
im renting a house with a fireplace, ive used it once but had alot of smoke coming in, was the fire not hot enough to assist in the smoke rising? is some smoke coming in normal? any tips or tricks ?

Answer:
I have the same problem.
First I don't have a fire unless it's 45 degrees or below. The fireplace draws a lot better when it's cold.
Second, use well seasoned wood. It burns a lot cleaner. If your wood is not seasoned start the fire with a synthetic log and add your wood on top after it gets going.
Third, take a newspaper, twist it tight, light the end and hold it up the chimney to start the draw.
Keep in mind that open fireplaces are energy inefficient. That's why a previous answerer suggested opening a nearby window. That way the fire will use outside air rather than conditioned air from the rest of the house.

Question : How do I seal off under the fireplace in the ceiling of a basement closet under the 1st floor fireplace?
I have a basement closet directly under the 1st floor fireplace that smoke enters into the closet from the fireplace above it. How do I seal off the fireplace floor? Is there any specific materials required?
The ceiling of the closet in the basement has fiberglass insulation above it, but when I pull back the insulation, there is a direct opening to the flume and ash trap of the fireplace above it. I'm looking for the right material to use to seal this off but also be flame retardant to not burn the insultation material... or my house for that matter.

Question : Fireplace - what's the best way to have a real fire in a fireplace?
We have opened our fireplace and placed some tiles as an hearth. We also have a lovel surrounding made of old sea defence wood. However, the hole in the fireplace is large and we are wondering how we can use this to have real wood fires as the smoke will probably come back into the room? Is there a way about this?
Answer:
Make sure you get the chimney sweep in to clean the chimney and check that the flue is in a useable condition.
The smoke will not come back into the room, as the chimney is what draws the smoke up and out of the house.
Just make sure you get it fully swept and checked out before you light anything in there, chimney fires are not fun.

Question : What color should I paint my fireplace?
I have red walls and a starch white fireplace. The fireplace looks aweful. I am not sure what would be a good color to paint it. Its a concrete fireplace.
I think the tan would be good. however my adjacent wall is tan, would that still look okay. My couch is dark brown

How about going with a natural kind of color so as to not clash with the red? I suggest a tan shade... kind of reminiscent of adobe structures since your fireplace is made of concrete.
